Living in Saudi Arabia - 10 Tips for Living in Saudi Arabia

Welcome to the land of vast deserts, rich culture, and burgeoning cities, Saudi Arabia. As a digital nomad, you're about to embark on an adventure that's as much about exploring a unique way of life as it is about your work. To help you navigate this new landscape, here are 10 essential tips for making the most of your time in this captivating country.

1. Embrace the Local Culture with Open Arms

Immersing yourself in Saudi culture can be a rewarding experience. Take the time to learn about the customs, traditions, and social norms. For instance, showing respect during the five daily prayer times is appreciated, and understanding the significance of Ramadan can enhance your social interactions. Engage with locals, try traditional Saudi dishes like Kabsa, and if you're invited to a Majlis (a social gathering), go—it's a great way to build relationships and experience authentic Saudi hospitality.

2. Understand the Importance of Dress Code

Adhering to the dress code is crucial in Saudi Arabia. Men should opt for long trousers and shirts that cover their shoulders, while women are expected to wear an abaya in public spaces. Although the rules for foreign women have relaxed slightly, it's still advisable to dress conservatively. Carrying a scarf is wise, as you may need to cover your hair in certain areas or during specific events. Observing these customs not only shows respect but also helps you blend in more comfortably.

3. Learn Basic Arabic Phrases

While English is widely spoken in business circles, knowing some Arabic can go a long way. Simple phrases like "As-salamu alaykum" (peace be upon you) for greetings and "Shukran" (thank you) can break the ice and show your respect for the local language. Many language apps can help you pick up the basics, and locals usually appreciate the effort, often leading to warmer interactions and even a few laughs as you try to pronounce "Khalas!" (enough or finished) correctly.

4. Navigate the Housing Market Carefully

Finding the right place to live is crucial for your comfort and productivity. Compounds are popular among digital nomads and expats as they offer amenities and a sense of community, often with fewer restrictions on dress and behavior. However, they can be pricey. For a more local experience, consider renting an apartment or villa outside a compound. Always visit properties in person and negotiate; landlords may offer better deals or include utilities once a rapport is established.

5. Get to Grips with Transportation

Public transport is still developing in many Saudi cities, so having a car is often the most convenient option. Ride-hailing apps like Uber and Careem are widely used and reliable. If you choose to drive, be prepared for a different driving style than you might be used to. Traffic can be heavy, and local driving habits may seem aggressive. Always stay alert and be aware of the latest traffic laws to avoid fines.

6. Stay Connected Digitally

As a digital nomad, reliable internet is your lifeline. Fortunately, Saudi Arabia offers good connectivity, with many cafes, restaurants, and public spaces providing free Wi-Fi. It's worth investing in a local SIM card for your mobile device to ensure you have internet access on the go. Zain, STC, and Mobily are popular network providers, each with various packages to suit different needs and budgets.

7. Respect Local Laws and Regulations

Saudi Arabia has strict laws that may be very different from what you're used to. Alcohol is prohibited, and there are severe penalties for drug offenses. It's also important to be mindful of laws regarding public behavior and interactions between men and women. Familiarize yourself with these laws to avoid unintentional offenses. Remember, ignorance is not considered an excuse, and the legal system can be unforgiving.

8. Explore the Country's Natural Beauty

Don't miss out on the stunning landscapes Saudi Arabia has to offer. From the Red Sea's coral reefs to the Empty Quarter's rolling sand dunes, there's much to explore. Take a weekend trip to Al Ula to see the ancient Nabatean tombs of Madain Saleh or hike the mountain trails of Asir National Park. These excursions not only provide a break from work but also deepen your appreciation for the country's diverse environment.

9. Manage Your Finances Wisely

Life in Saudi Arabia can be expensive, but as a digital nomad, you're likely free from many taxes, including income tax. Budget wisely and take advantage of tax-free shopping. Be aware of international transaction fees and consider opening a local bank account if you plan to stay long-term. This can help you manage daily expenses more efficiently and avoid losing money on currency exchange fluctuations.

10. Build a Supportive Expat Community

Lastly, connect with fellow expats. They can be an invaluable resource for advice, support, and friendship. Join online forums, attend local events, or participate in sports clubs and social groups. These connections can help you navigate the challenges of living in a new country and provide a sense of belonging. Plus, they often lead to networking opportunities that can enhance your professional life as a digital nomad.

Living in Saudi Arabia as a digital nomad offers a unique blend of professional freedom and cultural immersion. By following these tips, you'll be better equipped to enjoy a fulfilling experience in this dynamic country. Embrace the adventure, and you'll find that Saudi Arabia has much to offer beyond its oil-rich reputation.

Digital Nomads and Expats talk about Living in Saudi Arabia

"You will have great fun. Just make sure you get housed on Arabian Homes or The Cove. Arabian Homes is an open compound, a bit out in the sticks (17Km from Royal COmmission) and is a mature compound i.e. a bit faded. The Cove is westerners only, in the Royal Commission and is brand-new. But it's very popular and not easy to get into. May be a waiting list," said one member living in Yanbu.
