Thinking about to Amman? Below we highlight some of the pros and cons of living in Amman.

Considering a move to Amman as a digital nomad? You're not alone. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and surprisingly robust tech scene, Amman has been gaining traction among remote workers. But what are the pros and cons of living in this Middle Eastern city? Let's delve into the details to help you make an informed decision.

Pros of Living in Amman, Jordan as a Digital Nomad

Amman offers a myriad of advantages for digital nomads. Firstly, the cost of living is relatively low compared to many other digital nomad hotspots. A one-bedroom apartment in the city center can be found for around $400 USD per month, with utilities often included. Street food is abundant and affordable, with a delicious shawarma or falafel sandwich costing less than $2 USD. One member recalls, "I was amazed by how far my money went in Amman. I could eat out every day, explore the city, and still save money."

The city also boasts a growing tech and startup scene. Co-working spaces like ZINC and The Tank offer high-speed internet and a community of like-minded individuals. Amman also hosts various tech events and meetups, providing ample opportunities for networking. A digital nomad based in Amman shares, "I was pleasantly surprised by the tech scene here. It's dynamic and full of opportunities to connect and collaborate."

Amman's rich history and culture are other significant draws. From the ancient Roman Theater to the bustling markets of Downtown, there's always something to explore. The city's friendly locals are often eager to share their culture and traditions, making it easy to feel welcomed and integrated.

Cons of Living in Amman, Jordan as a Digital Nomad

While Amman has its charms, it also presents several challenges. Internet speed and reliability can be an issue, especially outside of co-working spaces. Power outages, though less frequent than before, can still occur. One digital nomad laments, "The internet can be spotty, which can be frustrating when you're on a tight deadline."

The language barrier can also pose a problem. While many younger Jordanians speak excellent English, older generations and those outside of Amman may not. Learning basic Arabic can greatly enhance your experience, but it's a challenge that shouldn't be underestimated.

Lastly, Amman's conservative culture may require some adjustment, especially for those coming from more liberal backgrounds. Dressing modestly is expected, and public displays of affection are generally frowned upon. Alcohol is not widely available, and the nightlife scene is more subdued compared to other cities. A digital nomad shares, "It took some time to get used to the cultural norms, but it was a rewarding learning experience."

Living in Amman as a digital nomad is a unique experience filled with opportunities for cultural immersion, exploration, and growth. However, it's not without its challenges. By understanding and preparing for both the pros and cons, you can make the most of your time in this fascinating city.
