What do I need to know before moving to Whitstable?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Whitstable, they said:

"Expats moving to Whitstable, should be aware of the following: 1. Whitstable is a small coastal town in Kent, known for its picturesque beaches, charming streets, and vibrant arts scene. 2. The cost of living in Whitstable is relatively high compared to other towns in the region, with property prices and rental costs being particularly steep. 3. The town has a strong sense of community, with many local events and festivals taking place throughout the year, such as the Whitstable Oyster Festival and the Whitstable Biennale. 4. Whitstable is well-connected to London, with regular train services to the capital taking just over an hour, making it a popular choice for commuters. 5. The town has a good selection of schools, both primary and secondary, with some achieving high ratings from Ofsted, the UK's education standards regulator. 6. Healthcare services are available through the National Health Service (NHS), with a local medical center and several dental practices in the town. 7. Whitstable has a range of shops, restaurants, and pubs, with a focus on independent and locally-owned businesses. 8. The town is popular with tourists, particularly during the summer months, which can lead to increased traffic and crowded streets. 9. Whitstable has a relatively mild climate, with cool winters and warm summers, although it can be quite windy due to its coastal location. 10. Expats should familiarize themselves with UK laws and customs, as well as the process for obtaining a visa or residence permit if required. 11. It is important to have a good understanding of the British currency, the pound sterling, and to set up a UK bank account upon arrival. 12. Finally, expats should be prepared for the British sense of humor, which can be quite dry and sarcastic, and may take some getting used to," commented one expat who made the move to Whitstable.
