What do I need to know before moving to Dunedin?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Dunedin, they said:

"Dunedin is a city known for its Scottish heritage, Victorian and Edwardian architecture, and its vibrant student population due to the University of Otago. The city has a temperate maritime climate, with mild summers and cool winters, so expats should be prepared for this type of weather. The cost of living in Dunedin is relatively low compared to other major cities in New Zealand, making it an attractive place for expats. The city is also known for its strong arts and culture scene, with numerous galleries, theaters, and festivals throughout the year. Dunedin's healthcare system is of a high standard, with several hospitals and clinics throughout the city. However, expats should ensure they have adequate health insurance as medical costs can be high. Public transportation in Dunedin is reliable and affordable, with buses being the primary mode of transport. However, many residents also choose to walk or cycle due to the city's compact size. For those who prefer to drive, it's important to note that New Zealanders drive on the left side of the road. Dunedin is a safe city with a low crime rate, but like any city, it's always important to take precautions and be aware of your surroundings. The city is also very welcoming to expats, with various social and support groups available. English is the primary language spoken in Dunedin, but there is also a significant Maori population, so learning some basic Maori phrases could be beneficial. The city has a range of accommodation options, from apartments in the city center to houses in the suburbs, so expats should research and consider their needs before deciding where to live. Finally, Dunedin is surrounded by stunning natural beauty, including beaches, wildlife, and hiking trails, so outdoor enthusiasts will have plenty to explore," replied a member in Dunedin.
