What do I need to know before moving to Baguio city?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Baguio city, they said:

"Baguio City, also known as the "Summer Capital of the Philippines", is located in the northern part of the country and is known for its cool climate, making it a popular destination for both locals and foreigners. Before moving to Baguio City, expats should be aware of several important factors. Firstly, the cost of living in Baguio City is relatively low compared to other major cities in the Philippines. However, prices for goods and services can be higher due to the city's tourist popularity. Secondly, the city's climate is cooler than most parts of the Philippines, with temperatures rarely exceeding 26 degrees Celsius. This can be a welcome relief from the tropical heat, but it also means you'll need to pack appropriate clothing. Thirdly, English is widely spoken in Baguio City, making it easier for expats to communicate. However, learning some basic phrases in the local language, Tagalog, can be beneficial. Fourthly, Baguio City is known for its vibrant arts scene, with numerous galleries, festivals, and craft markets. It's also home to the Baguio Country Club and Camp John Hay, which offer golfing and other recreational activities. Fifthly, the city has a good healthcare system with several hospitals and clinics. However, it's advisable for expats to have comprehensive health insurance. Sixthly, traffic can be heavy in Baguio City, especially during peak tourist season. Public transportation is available, but it can be crowded. Lastly, Baguio City is relatively safe, but like any city, it's important to take precautions. Be aware of your surroundings, especially at night, and avoid displaying expensive items in public. In conclusion, Baguio City offers a unique living experience with its cool climate, vibrant arts scene, and low cost of living. However, expats should be prepared for the city's heavy traffic, higher prices due to tourism, and the need for comprehensive health insurance," explained one expat living in Baguio city, Philippines.
