What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Arima?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Arima about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Trinidad & Tobago. The country has both public and private healthcare, with the private sector offering a higher standard of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies may have a waiting period before maternity coverage is available, so plan accordingly. Find a reputable obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. Arima has several healthcare facilities, but you may want to consider traveling to a larger hospital in Port of Spain for more specialized care. Register your pregnancy with your home country's embassy or consulate. This will make it easier to obtain a passport and citizenship for your baby. Understand the local customs and traditions related to pregnancy and childbirth. In Trinidad & Tobago, it's common for extended family to be involved in the pregnancy and postnatal care. Prepare for the climate. Arima can be hot and humid, which may be uncomfortable during pregnancy. Stay hydrated and take steps to stay cool. Learn about the parental leave policies in Trinidad & Tobago. If you're working, you'll want to understand your rights and responsibilities regarding maternity leave. Finally, connect with other expats who have had babies in Arima. They can provide valuable advice and support during this exciting time," explained one expat living in Arima, Trinidad & Tobago.
