What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Igoumenitsa?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Igoumenitsa about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Greek healthcare system. Greece has a mix of public and private healthcare, and as an expat, you may be eligible for public healthcare if you are a legal resident and contribute to the social security system. Secondly, you should find a good obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language. Communication is key during pregnancy and childbirth, so it's important to find a healthcare provider you can communicate with effectively. Thirdly, prenatal care is very important. Regular check-ups and tests are necessary to ensure the health of both the mother and the baby. Fourthly, you should prepare for the birth by attending prenatal classes, if available. These classes can help you understand what to expect during labor and delivery, and can also provide useful information about caring for a newborn. Fifthly, you should plan for the birth. This includes deciding where you want to give birth (in a hospital, a birthing center, or at home), who you want to be present during the birth, and what kind of birth you want (natural, epidural, cesarean section, etc.). Sixthly, you should familiarize yourself with Greek customs and traditions related to childbirth. This can help you understand what to expect and can also help you integrate into the local culture. Lastly, after the birth, you should register the birth with your home country's embassy or consulate to ensure that your child has citizenship in your home country. You should also register the birth with the local authorities in Greece to ensure that your child has all the necessary documentation," remarked another expat in Igoumenitsa, Greece.
