What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Egilsstadir?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Egilsstadir about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Iceland. The country has a high standard of healthcare and all residents, including expats, have access to it. Pregnant women in Iceland are entitled to free prenatal care. This includes regular check-ups, ultrasounds, and other necessary tests. Make sure to register your pregnancy with a healthcare center as soon as you find out you're expecting. Icelandic law entitles women to a maternity leave of three months, and the same applies to fathers. There is also an additional three months that can be split between the parents as they see fit. If you're not fluent in Icelandic, you might want to find a healthcare provider who speaks your language. While most Icelanders speak English, communication is crucial when it comes to healthcare. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any cultural differences or practices you may encounter. Make sure to familiarize yourself with the process of registering your baby's birth and obtaining a birth certificate. This process may be different than in your home country. Lastly, take advantage of the parental groups and resources available in Egilsstadir. These can provide valuable support and advice, as well as an opportunity to connect with other parents in the area," explained one expat living in Egilsstadir, Iceland.
