What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Cancun?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Cancun about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Cancun. Mexico has both public and private healthcare, with the latter often being preferred by expats due to shorter waiting times and generally higher standards of care. Ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some insurance companies may have a waiting period before maternity coverage kicks in, so plan accordingly. Find a reputable obstetrician or midwife who speaks your language. Communication is key during this important time, so you want to ensure you fully understand all medical advice and procedures. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can provide emotional support and help navigate the healthcare system. They can also assist with communication if Spanish is not your first language. Research hospitals and birthing centers in Cancun to find one that aligns with your birth plan. Some may offer more natural birthing options, while others may be more medically-focused. Prepare for the paperwork. In Mexico, you'll need to register your baby's birth within 180 days to ensure they receive Mexican citizenship. If you want your child to have citizenship in your home country, you'll need to contact your local embassy or consulate. Take prenatal classes, ideally ones that cater to expats. This can be a great way to meet other expectant parents and learn about the birthing process in Mexico. Finally, embrace the local culture. Mexican society places a great deal of importance on family, and this can be a wonderful environment in which to raise a child," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to Cancun, Mexico.
