What do expats find most challenging?

"The most challenging has been the language barrier. Although I'm getting better at the language I still have a long way to go. Another challenge is the double price standard for foreigners. I'm not a tourist, I live here but still am charged double or higher for many goods and services. There is also an attitude among the locals that there's something wrong with a single woman living alone. It does get a bit tiresome explaining that I'm single because I want to be. And no, I'm really not interested in meeting your brother, cousin, neighbor, etc," mentioned another expat when asked about moving to San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala.

"Expats in San Juan La Laguna often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture. The majority of the population speaks Tz'utujil, a Mayan language, and while Spanish is also spoken, it is not as prevalent. This can make communication difficult for expats who are not familiar with these languages. Another challenge is adapting to the slower pace of life. The local culture values relaxation and family time over the hustle and bustle of a busy work schedule. This can be a significant adjustment for expats used to a faster, more task-oriented lifestyle. The local diet can also be a challenge for some expats. Traditional Guatemalan food is heavily based on corn, beans, and local fruits and vegetables. While it is fresh and healthy, it can be a big change for those used to a Western diet. Additionally, expats may find it challenging to navigate the local customs and social norms. Guatemalan culture is deeply rooted in tradition and respect for elders and authority figures. Understanding and respecting these customs is crucial for integrating into the community. Lastly, while San Juan La Laguna is known for its safety compared to other parts of Guatemala, petty crime can still be a concern. Expats may need to take extra precautions to ensure their personal safety and the security of their belongings," commented one expat who made the move to San Juan La Laguna, Guatemala.
