As a foreigner living in Melbourne, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?
We asked expats in Melbourne if they have access to public healthcare in Melbourne. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...
"As a foreigner living in Melbourne, your access to public healthcare will depend on your visa status and the reciprocal healthcare agreements between Australia and your home country. If you are from a country with a reciprocal healthcare agreement, you may be eligible for Medicare, which provides access to public healthcare services, including subsidized or free treatment by healthcare professionals, free treatment and accommodation in public hospitals, and subsidized prescription medications. The public healthcare system in Australia is known for its high quality and efficiency, with well-trained medical professionals and modern facilities. However, waiting times for non-urgent treatments can be longer in the public system compared to private healthcare. It is recommended to check your eligibility for Medicare and consider private health insurance to cover any additional healthcare needs," wrote a member who made the move to Melbourne, Australia.
