Summary: As a digital nomad in Axum, keeping an eye on your budget is key. Here are 7 Free things to do in Axum.

As a digital nomad, exploring the ancient city of Axum in Ethiopia offers a unique blend of history, culture, and adventure without breaking the bank. Axum, once the center of a great empire and the home of the Queen of Sheba, is rich in archaeological wonders and historical significance. Here are nine free things to do in Axum that will enrich your experience, ranging from the most popular attractions to hidden gems that are off the beaten path.

Stelae Park

The Stelae Park is one of Axum's most iconic sites, featuring a collection of ancient obelisks that date back to the 3rd and 4th centuries. These towering granite stelae are a testament to the city's past as a powerful kingdom. The largest standing obelisk rises to a height of over 23 meters and is intricately carved to resemble a multi-storied building. Walking among these ancient monoliths is like stepping back in time, and it's a must-visit for anyone interested in history and archaeology.

Location: Near the Northern Stelae Field, Axum. The park is easily accessible from the center of the city.

Travel Tip: Visit during the early morning or late afternoon to avoid the heat of the day and to see the stelae cast dramatic shadows.

Nearby: After exploring the park, head to AB Cultural Restaurant for traditional Ethiopian cuisine, including the famous injera.

The Tombs of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel

Discover the ancient Tombs of Kings Kaleb and Gebre Meskel, where the remains of these 6th-century rulers are believed to be housed. These underground tombs are an incredible example of Axumite architecture and engineering. Visitors can explore the stone chambers and corridors, marveling at the historical significance and the mystery that still shrouds these ancient kings.

Location: Near the Stelae Park, Axum. The tombs are a short walk from the main cluster of obelisks.

Travel Tip: Bring a flashlight to better navigate the dimly lit interiors of the tombs.

Nearby: Relax with a coffee at the nearby Tomoca Coffee, where you can enjoy Ethiopia's famous coffee ceremony.

Queen of Sheba's Bath

The Queen of Sheba's Bath is a large reservoir that, according to legend, was used by the Queen of Sheba herself. While historians believe it was likely a water source for the ancient city, the site is still steeped in myth and offers a tranquil spot for reflection. Surrounded by ruins and local farmland, it's a picturesque place to visit and ponder the rich history of Axum.

Location: On the outskirts of Axum, a short drive or a moderate walk from the city center.

Travel Tip: Visit during the rainy season when the reservoir is full, and the surrounding landscape is lush and green.

Nearby: Stop by the Sunshine Café for a light snack and a refreshing smoothie after your visit.

The Church of St. Mary of Zion

The Church of St. Mary of Zion is a significant religious site, believed by many to house the original Ark of the Covenant. While the chapel said to contain the Ark is off-limits to the public, visitors can explore the surrounding complex and newer church, which is a pilgrimage site for Ethiopian Orthodox Christians. The architecture and atmosphere are both serene and spiritually uplifting.

Location: In the heart of Axum, adjacent to the Stelae Park.

Travel Tip: Dress modestly out of respect for the religious nature of the site, and try to visit during a religious service to experience the vibrant local worship.

Nearby: Enjoy a meal at the Roha Hotel's restaurant, which offers both Ethiopian and international dishes.

Ezana's Inscription

Ezana's Inscription is a fascinating artifact that provides insight into the history and language of ancient Axum. The stone slab features inscriptions in Ge'ez, Sabaean, and Greek, illustrating the multicultural influences of the Axumite Empire. It's a lesser-known attraction that offers a unique glimpse into the linguistic history of Ethiopia.

Location: Found in the park near the Stelae Field, it's within walking distance from the center of Axum.

Travel Tip: Take time to read the translations provided at the site to fully appreciate the historical significance of the inscriptions.

Nearby: Sample some local street food from vendors around the Stelae Park for an authentic and quick bite.

The Northern Stelae Field

While the main Stelae Park gets most of the attention, the Northern Stelae Field is a quieter area where you can see additional ancient obelisks scattered across a field. This site is less frequented by tourists and offers a more peaceful experience as you wander among these relics of the past.

Location: North of the main Stelae Park, within the city limits of Axum.

Travel Tip: Bring a camera or sketchbook to capture the serene beauty of these ancient monoliths without the crowds.

Nearby: The Central Café is a great spot to grab a coffee or a light lunch while you reflect on your visit.

Dungur Palace ('Queen of Sheba's Palace')

Dungur Palace, often referred to as the 'Queen of Sheba's Palace,' is an impressive set of ruins that provide a window into the grandeur of the Axumite Empire. Although it is unlikely to have been the actual palace of the Queen of Sheba, the site is still an important archaeological find with its large stone blocks and intricate carvings.

Location: In the western part of Axum, a bit removed from the city center but still within walking distance.

Travel Tip: Visit in the late afternoon when the setting sun casts a golden glow on the ruins, perfect for photography.

Nearby: Al Negashi Restaurant offers a variety of local dishes and is a great place to dine after exploring the ruins.

Gudit Stelae Field

The Gudit Stelae Field is another lesser-known site that features a collection of smaller and less ornate stelae. It's named after the legendary Queen Gudit, who is said to have destroyed the Axumite Empire. This site offers a more intimate and contemplative experience away from the larger tourist crowds.

Location: Situated to the south of the main Stelae Park, it's a short walk from the city's central area.

Travel Tip: Bring a guidebook or hire a local guide to learn more about the legends of Queen Gudit and the history of the stelae.

Nearby: The Yeha Hotel's restaurant is a convenient place to relax and enjoy a meal after your visit.

King Ezana's Park

King Ezana's Park is a tranquil green space in the heart of Axum, perfect for a leisurely stroll or a picnic. Named after the first Christian king of the Axumite Empire, the park is a great place to unwind and enjoy the local flora. It's a popular spot for locals, which makes it a great place to observe everyday life in Axum.

Location: Centrally located in Axum, adjacent to the main road that runs through the city.

Travel Tip: Bring a book or journal to enjoy some quiet time in the shade of the trees.

Nearby: The Remhai Hotel has a café where you can grab a refreshing drink or a quick snack after your time in the park.

Exploring Axum doesn't have to be expensive. With these nine free attractions, digital nomads can immerse themselves in the city's rich history and culture while maintaining their budget-conscious lifestyle.
