Real Estate in Ethiopia

By Betsy Burlingame

Last updated on Sep 22, 2023

Summary: An expat looking to buy a home in Ethiopia should start by researching the local real estate market. They should look for listings on websites such as Zillow, Trulia, and Realtor.com, as well as local real estate agents. Homes in Ethiopia typically include basic amenities such as running water, electricity, and a kitchen. Some homes may also include air conditioning, a garden, and a garage. Foreigners are allowed to own property in Ethiopia, but there are certain restrictions. For example, foreigners are not allowed to own land, and they must obtain permission from the Ethiopian government before purchasing a home.

How do I find a place to live in Ethiopia?

We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:

"Finding a place to live in Ethiopia can be a challenge, but there are a few options available. One option is to look for rental properties in the major cities such as Addis Ababa, Dire Dawa, and Mekelle. You can search online for rental listings or contact a local real estate agent for assistance. Another option is to look for furnished apartments or houses for rent in the suburbs of the major cities. You can also look for shared housing options such as hostels, guesthouses, and homestays. Finally, you can look for long-term rental options in rural areas, which may be more affordable than urban areas," said one expat who made the move to Ethiopia.
