Weather: Jönköping has a temperate continental climate with cold, snowy winters and mild summers; lake proximity moderates temperatures somewhat, but expect significant seasonal variation typical of southern Sweden.

Walk around Jönköping and you'll notice the water first—Lake Vättern dominates the city's identity, its vast expanse visible from downtown streets and the waterfront promenade. This is a working city on Sweden's second-largest lake, not a resort town, though the lakeside setting gives it an unusual openness for inland Sweden. The match industry built Jönköping in the 1800s, and that industrial DNA still shapes the place: solid architecture, a pragmatic character, genuine rather than polished. Today the economy has shifted toward education and tech—Jönköping University brings students and research activity—but you'll still find manufacturing alongside startups. The downtown is compact and walkable, with local restaurants and shops rather than chains dominating. The surrounding landscape is classic Swedish: forests, lake access for swimming and boating, quiet enough to feel like a real town rather than a commuter suburb, yet connected enough by rail and road to reach Gothenburg or Stockholm without feeling isolated.
