Weather: Shetland has a cool, windy maritime climate with frequent cloud, changeable conditions, and relatively small temperature swings through the year. Summers are mild rather than warm, and winters are usually cold but not extreme, with daylight and storminess varying a lot by season.

With more than 100 islands and islets spread across the North Atlantic, Shetland feels remote in the best possible way: open skies, long horizons, and a coastline that is never far away. The islands sit between mainland Scotland, Norway, and the Faroe Islands, and that position has shaped everything from place names to local traditions. Lerwick is the main town and the everyday hub, but much of Shetland’s character comes from smaller communities, crofting land, working harbours, and roads that can feel wonderfully quiet once you leave the centre. Wildlife is part of daily life here too, from seabirds and seals to the famous ponies that are closely associated with the islands. The landscape is not about big forests or dramatic peaks; it is more about moorland, sea cliffs, sheltered voes, and weather that can change quickly in a single afternoon. People who live here tend to value self-reliance, close-knit communities, and the practical rhythm of island life, where ferries, flights, fishing, and local services matter a great deal. Shetland also has a strong cultural identity, with Norse influence still visible in festivals, dialect, music, and crafts. It is a place where the sea is not just scenery but part of how the islands work, travel, and think about themselves. For visitors and residents alike, the appeal is in the scale of it all: spacious, windswept, and distinctive, with a sense of place that is hard to mistake for anywhere else.
