Weather: Aberdeen experiences a cool maritime climate with frequent wind and rain; winters are cold but rarely severe, and summers are mild with long daylight hours.

Aberdeen sits on Scotland's northeast coast where the Don and Dee rivers meet the North Sea, a granite-built city that catches the light differently depending on the weather—sometimes silver, sometimes austere. Walking through the city center, you notice the distinctive silvery-grey stone of the buildings first, then the wind off the water, then the sense that this is a working port city, not a museum piece. The harbor still bustles with fishing boats and offshore supply vessels. Union Street, the main thoroughfare, runs a mile through the heart of the city with Victorian architecture, independent shops, and cafes tucked between larger retailers. The Beach area offers a long sandy stretch with an amusement park, seafront promenade, and fish-and-chip shops that draw locals year-round. Inland, Duthie Park provides green space with formal gardens and woodland walks. The city has a strong oil and gas heritage—the industry transformed Aberdeen in the 1970s and remains significant to its economy, though the city is diversifying into renewable energy, technology, and life sciences. The University of Aberdeen, founded in 1495, anchors the academic and cultural life. Public transport is reliable, and the city feels manageable in scale—large enough to have restaurants, galleries, and theaters, small enough that you're not overwhelmed. The accent is distinctive and the people direct.
