Azerbaijan, officially known as the Republic of Azerbaijan, is a country located at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bounded by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. The exclave of Nakhchivan is bordered by Armenia to the north and east, Iran to the south and west, while having a short border with Turkey to the northwest. Azerbaijan's capital and largest city is Baku, which is famed for its medieval walled Inner City. The country has a rich cultural heritage and is known as the land of fire due to its natural burning flames, which is also reflected in its modern architecture. Azerbaijan's economy is largely based on oil and gas production, but it also has a growing agricultural and industrial sector. The country has a diverse landscape that includes the Caspian Sea's coastline, the Greater Caucasus mountain range, and arid plains. It has a continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Azerbaijan has a unique blend of history and modernity, with ancient historical sites alongside contemporary buildings. The country is known for its hospitable people and vibrant culture, which includes traditional music, dance, and cuisine. Azerbaijan has been historically significant for its strategic location along the Silk Road and has a complex history of Persian, Turkish, and Soviet influences. Today, it is a secular nation with a majority Turkic and Shi'a Muslim population, but it also has a history of religious tolerance and diversity. The country celebrates its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991 and has since been working towards integrating with the Western world and improving its economy and governance.

Cost of Living

The cost of living in Azerbaijan is generally considered moderate. While Baku, the capital city, can be more expensive due to its development and expatriate communities, overall, the country offers a reasonable cost of living compared to many Western nations.

Weather

Azerbaijan features a dry, semi-arid climate in the central and eastern regions, while the southeastern and northeastern regions have a more humid subtropical climate. The country experiences hot summers and mild winters, with the Greater Caucasus mountain range in the north providing cooler temperatures and more precipitation. The Caspian Sea coast is known for its milder climate compared to the inland areas.

Educational System Azerbaijan

The educational system in Azerbaijan is structured similarly to many Eastern European and CIS countries, with a strong emphasis on comprehensive education. Education in Azerbaijan is compulsory from the age of 6 to 17, which includes primary, general secondary, and full secondary education. The school year typically starts on September 15 and ends in June. The education system is divided into three main levels: primary education (grades 1-4), basic education (grades 5-9), and secondary education (grades 10-11). After completing the 9th grade, students can choose to continue their studies in the 10th and 11th grades to prepare for university entrance, or they can enter vocational schools where they receive specialized training for various trades. The quality of education in Azerbaijan has been improving, with the government investing in educational reforms, teacher training, and infrastructure development. The curriculum includes a wide range of subjects, including Azerbaijani language and literature, mathematics, natural sciences, social sciences, foreign languages, and physical education. Schools in Azerbaijan also offer various extracurricular activities, such as sports, music, and art. Upon graduation from the 11th grade, students receive a Certificate of Complete Secondary Education and can take university entrance exams. For expatriate families, there are international schools in Azerbaijan that offer education in English and follow international curricula, such as the International Baccalaureate (IB).

Healthcare in Azerbaijan

The healthcare system in Azerbaijan is a mix of public and private healthcare services. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and provides services to citizens at a low cost, but it often suffers from underfunding and a lack of modern equipment and facilities. Private healthcare in Azerbaijan offers higher quality services with more modern facilities and equipment, but at a significantly higher cost. Expats and digital nomads can access public healthcare once they have registered for a temporary or permanent residency permit, which allows them to contribute to the state healthcare insurance system. However, many expats and digital nomads choose to have private health insurance to ensure access to better healthcare services.
