Ballina is a coastal town on the far north coast of New South Wales, often confused with the larger regional hub of Byron Bay an hour south, but it's its own distinct place with a quieter, more working-town character. The town sits where the Richmond River meets the Pacific, and that river mouth has shaped everything about it—the fishing industry, the local economy, the way people move through the place. You'll find a genuine working harbor with commercial fishing boats alongside recreational vessels, a main street that feels lived-in rather than polished, and a community that's been here for generations. The beaches are excellent and less crowded than Byron's famous breaks; Lighthouse Beach and Shelly Beach draw surfers and swimmers. There's a strong sense of place without the tourist overlay that defines some other NSW coastal towns. The hinterland is green and agricultural, and the town itself has that particular Australian coastal-regional mix—good cafes and restaurants, local pubs, a farmers market, but also hardware stores and working-class neighborhoods. It's the kind of place where people actually live and work, not just pass through.
