Weather: Lorne experiences a temperate oceanic climate with mild winters and warm summers; the Southern Ocean keeps temperatures moderate year-round, though the coast can be windy and rainy in winter months.

Lorne sits on Victoria's southwestern coast where the Great Ocean Road curves into town, and the pace immediately slows—this is where Melbourne's weekenders come to exhale. The town wraps around a bay with a long sandy beach that draws swimmers and surfers year-round, backed by a main street of modest cafes, fish-and-chip shops, and holiday rental offices. The hinterland rises steeply into forested hills dotted with walking trails and lookouts; the Otway Ranges loom behind, creating a landscape that feels both accessible and wild. Lorne has the feel of a place that's been a holiday destination for generations—there's a settled, slightly faded gentility to it, the kind of town where the same families return to the same beach house every summer. The population swells dramatically during school holidays and weekends, then contracts to a quieter core of year-round residents. It's not a party town or a trendy destination; it's a straightforward coastal retreat where people come to walk, swim, eat fresh fish, and sit with a coffee watching the water. The town has resisted heavy development, maintaining a low-rise, low-key character that feels almost quaint compared to more fashionable coastal spots.
