Banlung is the capital of Ratanakiri Province in northeastern Cambodia, a remote highland town that sits roughly 750 meters above sea level—making it one of Cambodia's coolest settlements. The town serves as the administrative and commercial hub for a sparsely populated region known for its volcanic red soil, dense forests, and indigenous Bunong communities. Life here moves at a deliberate pace; the main streets are lined with modest shophouses, local markets, and a handful of guesthouses catering to the small but steady stream of backpackers and adventure travelers. Banlung itself feels caught between its past as a French colonial outpost and its present as a frontier town—colonial-era buildings stand alongside newer concrete structures. The town lacks the tourist infrastructure of Siem Reap or Phnom Penh, which means fewer crowds but also fewer creature comforts. Most residents are Khmer, though the province's indigenous populations remain culturally significant. Internet and electricity are reliable in the town center but can be spotty elsewhere.
