A 60-kilometre ribbon of Adriatic shoreline gives Makarska Riviera its identity, with the steep Biokovo mountain wall rising almost straight behind the towns and beaches. The setting is dramatic in a way that changes how the whole coast feels: one minute you are on a promenade lined with cafes, pine trees, and small harbours, and the next you are looking up at limestone peaks that seem close enough to touch. Makarska is the best-known centre, but the Riviera is really a chain of seaside places such as Brela, Baška Voda, Tučepi, and Podgora, each with its own pace and waterfront character. In summer the area fills with swimmers, boat trips, and evening walks along the seafront, while outside the peak season it becomes quieter and more local, with a slower rhythm and easier access to the beaches and trails. The coastline is a major draw for people who want clear water, pebble coves, and long stretches of promenade rather than a dense urban environment. Inland, the slopes of Biokovo shape daily life as much as the sea does, bringing hiking, viewpoints, and a sense of enclosure that makes the Riviera feel more dramatic than a typical resort strip. The towns are compact and walkable, with tourism, hospitality, and seasonal services playing a big role in the local economy. At the same time, there is enough everyday infrastructure for year-round living, especially in the larger settlements, though the area still feels strongly oriented toward visitors and holiday homes. For many people, the appeal is the contrast: mountain and sea, busy summer energy and off-season calm, all packed into a narrow coastal corridor.
