Trogir

Suburban Coastal Beaches

Population: 10k

Cost of Living: Moderate

Train Access: No

Bus Access: Yes (Local and regional public bus services, including connections to nearby towns and Split)

Weather: Trogir has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. Sea breezes help in summer, while the shoulder seasons are often comfortable for walking and outdoor dining.

Retirees, second-home owners, and day-trippers come to Trogir for a compact Adriatic base where daily life still feels tied to the sea and the old stone streets. The historic core sits on a small island between the mainland and Čiovo, so the first impression is of water, bridges, boats, and a town center that can be crossed on foot without rushing. Narrow lanes open onto small squares, church facades, and waterfront promenades where locals and visitors mix over coffee, gelato, or a late dinner. The pace is relaxed outside the busiest summer hours, but the town is not sleepy; ferries, marinas, tour boats, and nearby Split Airport keep it connected and active. Trogir’s appeal comes from its scale as much as its setting: you can live close to the center, walk to shops and services, and still be a short drive from larger employment and shopping options on the mainland. In season, the atmosphere shifts noticeably as cruise passengers and excursion groups arrive, filling the waterfront and the lanes around the cathedral and market area. Outside that peak, the town feels more local, with fishermen, commuters, and families using the same streets that visitors photograph. Housing and services are concentrated in and around the connected mainland and Čiovo areas, while the old center remains the most distinctive part of daily life. For people who want a smaller coastal place with easy access to Split and the airport, Trogir offers a practical base with a strong sense of place, especially if they value walkability, maritime scenery, and a historic setting that is still lived in rather than preserved behind glass.
