Manali

Country   Riverfront

Manali draws trekkers, mountaineers, and adventure seekers from across India and abroad, many arriving for seasons at a time to use it as a base for Himalayan expeditions or simply to escape the heat of the plains. The town sits in the Kullu Valley at roughly 2,050 meters elevation, where the Beas River cuts through steep forested slopes and the air carries the smell of deodar pine. Old Manali, the original settlement, clusters around narrow lanes with guesthouses, cafes, and small shops catering to backpackers; New Manali spreads along the main road with hotels and restaurants. The landscape shifts dramatically with season—spring brings wildflowers and clear skies ideal for trekking; summer fills the town with tourists; autumn turns the valley gold; winter closes higher passes and brings snow to the surrounding peaks. The town functions as a gateway: people use it to reach Rohtang Pass, trek to Hampta or Beas Kund, or venture into the Parvati Valley. Local Himachali culture persists in temples and traditional architecture, though tourism has reshaped much of the commercial center. The Beas River offers rafting and fishing. Manali's identity remains split between its role as a transit point for mountaineers and trekkers and its evolution into a tourist destination with cafes serving espresso and guesthouses offering yoga classes.
