Reggio Calabria is a coastal city located in the southernmost region of Calabria in southern Italy, situated on the Strait of Messina opposite Sicily. The city serves as the capital of the Metropolitan City of Reggio Calabria and is an important port and cultural hub in the region. Known for its strategic location and maritime heritage, Reggio Calabria has a rich history dating back to ancient Greek times. The city features a waterfront promenade called the Lungomare, which is one of the most beautiful seaside walks in Italy, offering stunning views across the strait toward Sicily. The historic center contains notable architecture and cultural institutions, including museums and churches reflecting its Byzantine, Norman, and modern influences. Reggio Calabria is home to the famous Riace Bronzes, two ancient Greek bronze statues housed in the National Museum of Magna Graecia, making it a significant archaeological destination. The city blends historical significance with modern urban amenities, serving as an economic and transportation hub for the region. Its position makes it an important gateway between mainland Italy and Sicily, with ferry connections across the strait. The surrounding area offers access to natural landscapes and coastal attractions typical of southern Calabria.
