Modena sits in the heart of Emilia-Romagna, a region where food culture runs deeper than in almost anywhere else in Italy. Walk through the centro storico and you'll notice the arcaded streets first—they create a rhythm of shade and light, protection from both sun and rain, spaces where people linger. The Ghirlandina tower anchors the Piazza Grande, a medieval square that feels lived-in rather than museumified. This is a city built on trade and craft: balsamic vinegar production has shaped the local economy for centuries, and you can visit acetaia workshops where vinegar ages in wooden barrels in attic rooms. The Ducal Palace, the Cathedral, and the Torre Ghirlandina form a architectural triad that speaks to Modena's importance as a Renaissance seat of power. The city has a working quality—it's not performing itself for tourists. The food scene extends beyond restaurants into markets and food shops where locals buy ingredients with the seriousness of people who cook at home. Modena is also known for its automotive heritage, home to Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Ducati. The surrounding countryside produces Parmigiano-Reggiano cheese and Modena balsamic, making the region a destination for food pilgrims.
