Weather: Bergen is one of Norway's wettest cities, with frequent rain year-round and mild winters that rarely drop far below freezing. Summers are cool and brief, with extended daylight hours.

Bergen pulses with a particular kind of energy—wet, maritime, and unhurried. Rain is constant enough that locals barely acknowledge it, and the city's rhythm follows the harbor and the surrounding mountains more than any clock. The Bryggen waterfront, with its row of Hanseatic merchant houses in ochre and red, feels less like a museum piece and more like the actual working heart of the place, where fish markets operate alongside galleries and cafes. The city spreads across seven hills, so walking anywhere means climbing, which keeps things feeling intimate despite the population. You're never far from water or forest. The cultural scene—music venues, theaters, street art—punches well above what you'd expect for a city this size. There's a scrappy, creative undercurrent here, a sense that people came to Bergen because they wanted to be somewhere specific, not just anywhere. The weather shapes everything: the light changes dramatically with the seasons, and winter brings long dark afternoons that make the city's cafes and restaurants feel especially welcoming. It's Scandinavian without feeling sterile—there's grit alongside the design sensibility.
