David is Panama's second-largest city and the commercial hub of Chiriquí Province, drawing entrepreneurs, agricultural workers, and families seeking opportunity in the country's western highlands. The city serves as a gateway to both the highlands and the Pacific lowlands, making it a natural crossroads for trade and migration. David's economy centers on agriculture—particularly pineapple, banana, and coffee production—alongside small manufacturing and retail. The urban core has grown considerably, with a mix of colonial-era buildings and modern commercial districts. Nearby, the Baru Volcano and cloud forests attract hikers and nature enthusiasts, while the cooler mountain climate distinguishes David from Panama's typically humid lowlands. The city functions as a working regional center rather than a tourist destination, with authentic local markets, modest hotels, and restaurants serving residents and business travelers. Infrastructure includes a regional airport connecting to Panama City and Costa Rica, making it accessible without requiring a long drive through the country.
