Digital Nomad Life in Micronesia

By Betsy Burlingame

Summary: Micronesia is not a popular destination for digital nomads. The most popular cities for digital nomads are usually larger cities with more amenities and infrastructure, such as Bangkok, Chiang Mai, and Ho Chi Minh City. Digital nomads like living in Micronesia because of its low cost of living, beautiful beaches, and friendly locals. A digital nomad can live on a monthly budget of around $1,000 in Micronesia. This budget can cover basic living expenses such as accommodation, food, and transportation. The culture of Micronesia is a mix of traditional and modern influences. The locals are friendly and welcoming, and the islands are known for their laid-back atmosphere. Foods popular in Micronesia include seafood, rice, and tropical fruits. Traditional dishes include kelaguen, a dish made with coconut milk, lemon juice, and fish, and tinola, a soup made with chicken, vegetables, and ginger.

What do people find most challenging about the culture in Micronesia?

"One of the most challenging aspects of the local culture for expats in Micronesia is the language barrier. English is not widely spoken in Micronesia, and many locals speak their own native language. This can make it difficult for expats to communicate with locals and to understand the local culture. Additionally, Micronesia has a strong sense of community and family, which can be difficult for expats to adjust to. Expats may also find it difficult to adjust to the slower pace of life in Micronesia, as well as the lack of modern amenities and infrastructure," said one expat in Micronesia.

What residency documents or visas did I need if I will be in Micronesia for a while?

"If you plan to stay in Micronesia for a while, you will need to obtain a valid passport and a visa. Depending on your nationality, you may need to apply for a tourist visa, a business visa, or a student visa. You may also need to apply for a residency permit if you plan to stay in Micronesia for an extended period of time," said one person in Micronesia.

"Healthcare services in Micronesia are provided by both public and private providers. The public healthcare system is funded by the government and is available to all citizens and permanent residents. The quality of public healthcare is generally good, with a range of services available including primary care, hospital care, and specialist care. Foreign residents are able to access the public healthcare system, however, they may be required to pay for some services. Expats in Micronesia can use the public healthcare system, however, they may need to pay for some services. Private healthcare is also available in Micronesia, and expats may choose to use this option if they wish," said one foreigner in Micronesia.
