What do I need to know before moving to Phuket?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Phuket, they said:

"Before moving to Phuket, expats should familiarize themselves with the local culture and customs. It is important to learn some basic Thai language to help with communication. Expats should also research the cost of living in Phuket, as it can be quite expensive. Additionally, expats should be aware of the tropical climate and the potential for natural disasters such as floods and typhoons. Finally, expats should make sure to obtain the necessary visas and permits before moving to Phuket," commented one expat who made the move to Phuket.

"Don't start long term. Do short term places and check things out. Make friends, be brave. Thai's are generally VERY helpful. I was made part of the family quickly," remarked one expat in Phuket, Thailand.
