What do I need to know about living in Brighton?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Brighton, they said:

"Brighton, is a vibrant and diverse city that offers a unique blend of seaside charm and cosmopolitan culture, making it an attractive retirement destination for expats. Before retiring in Brighton, expats should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, understanding the cost of living is crucial. Brighton is one of the more expensive cities in the UK, with costs for housing, groceries, and dining out being higher than the national average. Secondly, healthcare is an important consideration. The UK has a public healthcare system, the National Health Service (NHS), which provides free healthcare for all residents. However, waiting times can be long for non-emergency procedures, so some expats choose to take out private health insurance. Thirdly, Brighton has a temperate maritime climate, with mild winters and cool summers. The city is known for its windy weather, which can be a shock for those used to warmer climates. Fourthly, Brighton is a very walkable city with an excellent public transportation system. Owning a car is not necessary, and many residents choose to cycle or walk instead. Fifthly, Brighton is known for its open-minded and inclusive attitude. The city has a large LGBTQ+ community and hosts the UK's biggest Pride festival every year. Lastly, Brighton has a thriving arts and culture scene, with numerous galleries, theatres, and music venues. The city is also home to several festivals throughout the year, including the Brighton Festival and Brighton Fringe. In conclusion, retiring in Brighton can offer a high quality of life, with its rich culture, diverse community, and beautiful seaside location. However, the high cost of living and the city's windy weather are factors that should be considered," wrote one member in Brighton.
