What do I need to know about living in Alicante?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Alicante, they said:

"Expats considering retirement in Alicante, should be aware of several key factors. Firstly, it's important to understand the cost of living, which is generally lower than in many other European countries, but can vary depending on lifestyle and location. Healthcare in Spain is of a high standard, with both public and private options available. Expats should research the best healthcare plan for their needs and budget. The official language in Alicante is Spanish, so learning the language can greatly enhance your experience. However, English is widely spoken in tourist areas and among younger generations. Spain has a warm Mediterranean climate, with hot summers and mild winters, which can be a significant draw for many retirees. However, it's worth noting that the heat in summer can be intense. Spanish culture is rich and diverse, with a strong emphasis on family, food, and festivals. It's important to respect local customs and traditions. The process of buying property in Spain can be complex, so it's advisable to hire a local lawyer who can guide you through the process. Spain has a high standard of infrastructure, with good public transport, roads, and utilities. However, some rural areas may have less reliable services. Finally, it's important to understand the Spanish tax system, as Spain has a worldwide taxation policy, which means residents are taxed on their global income. It's advisable to seek professional advice to understand your tax obligations," remarked one expat living in Alicante, Spain.
