What do I need to know before moving to Matagalpa?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Matagalpa, they said:

"Matagalpa is a city located in the central highlands of the country, known for its cool climate, coffee plantations, and beautiful landscapes. Before moving to Matagalpa, expats should be aware that Spanish is the primary language spoken, so it would be beneficial to learn or have a basic understanding of Spanish. The cost of living in Matagalpa is relatively low compared to many Western countries, but it's important to note that salaries are also significantly lower. Healthcare facilities in Matagalpa are basic, and for serious medical conditions, you may need to travel to the capital, Managua. The city is generally safe, but like any place, it's important to take precautions, especially at night. Public transportation is available but may not be as reliable or comfortable as what expats may be used to. Matagalpa has a slower pace of life, which can be a significant change for those used to living in fast-paced cities. The city is surrounded by nature, offering plenty of opportunities for outdoor activities like hiking and bird watching. The food in Matagalpa is a mix of traditional Nicaraguan cuisine, with plenty of fresh fruits, vegetables, and local dishes to try. Expats should also be aware that while Matagalpa is developing, it still lacks some of the amenities and luxuries that may be standard in their home country. Internet service, for example, can be unreliable. Lastly, it's important to understand and respect the local customs and traditions. Nicaraguans are generally warm and welcoming, but it's essential to approach the new culture with an open mind and a willingness to adapt," wrote one member in Matagalpa.
