What do I need to know about living in Macao?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Macao, they said:

"Before retiring in Macao, expats should ensure they meet the visa and residency requirements needed to legally live in the country. It is important to research the cost of living and the options available for healthcare, as well as other essential services for daily living. It is recommended for expats to learn basic Mandarin Chinese as most locals do not speak English and learning the language will make it easier to navigate the city. Macao has a subtropical climate, with warm and humid summers and mild winters, so it is important to dress accordingly. Finally, becoming part of the local community and making friends will make the adjustment to the new way of life much easier," remarked one expat living in Macao, China, China.

"I would tell them a legendary Macanese saying: "In Macau there is a fountain, from which runs water charged with magical powers. Whoever drinks it will be bound to stay forever to the land of Macau, and thus, enable to leave its shores..."," wrote one member in Macao.
