What do I need to know before moving to Egilsstadir?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Egilsstadir, they said:

"Egilsstadir is a small town located in the east of Iceland, known for its peaceful environment and beautiful landscapes. Before moving to Egilsstadir, expats should know that the town has a population of just over 2,000 people, making it a close-knit community. The local language is Icelandic, but English is widely spoken, especially by the younger generation. The cost of living in Egilsstadir is relatively high, as is the case in most parts of Iceland. This includes the cost of housing, groceries, and dining out. However, healthcare in Iceland is of a high standard and is free for all residents. The climate in Egilsstadir is subarctic, with long, cold winters and short, cool summers. Expats should be prepared for this and pack appropriate clothing. The town is also quite remote, so those moving there should be comfortable with a slower pace of life and limited entertainment options. Egilsstadir is a great place for outdoor enthusiasts, with plenty of opportunities for hiking, fishing, and bird watching. The town is also home to some unique cultural attractions, including a folklore museum and an annual jazz festival. The job market in Egilsstadir is relatively small, with the main industries being agriculture, tourism, and small businesses. Therefore, it may be beneficial for expats to secure employment before moving. Finally, while public transportation is available in Egilsstadir, having a car can be beneficial for exploring the surrounding areas. However, driving conditions can be challenging, especially in winter, so expats should be prepared for this," remarked one expat who made the move to Egilsstadir.
