What do I need to know about living in Ampang?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Ampang, they said:

"Expats considering retiring in Ampang, should be aware of several factors to ensure a smooth transition and comfortable retirement. Firstly, it is essential to research and understand the Malaysian immigration policies and visa requirements for retirees, such as the Malaysia My Second Home (MM2H) program, which offers long-term residency options for eligible applicants. Cost of living in Ampang is generally lower than in many Western countries, but it is still crucial to create a realistic budget that accounts for housing, utilities, transportation, healthcare, and other daily expenses. Expats should also be prepared for the possibility of currency fluctuations affecting their retirement savings. Ampang offers a range of housing options, from condominiums to landed properties. It is essential to research the local property market, rental agreements, and property ownership laws before making any commitments. Engaging a reputable real estate agent can be helpful in navigating the property market. Healthcare in Malaysia is generally of high quality, with both public and private hospitals available. Expats should familiarize themselves with the local healthcare system, including the availability of medical facilities in Ampang, and consider obtaining comprehensive health insurance to cover any medical expenses. Malaysia is a multicultural and multilingual country, with Bahasa Malaysia being the official language. Although English is widely spoken, learning some basic Malay phrases can be beneficial for daily interactions and integrating into the local community. Expats should also be respectful of the diverse cultural and religious practices in Malaysia and be prepared to adapt to local customs and traditions. The climate in Ampang is tropical, with hot and humid weather throughout the year. Expats should be prepared for this climate and take necessary precautions, such as staying hydrated and using sun protection. Transportation options in Ampang include public transport, such as buses and trains, as well as taxis and ride-hailing services. Owning a car is also an option, but expats should be aware of the driving regulations and requirements for obtaining a Malaysian driver's license. Finally, it is essential for expats to maintain an active social life and engage with both the local and expatriate communities. Joining clubs, participating in local events, and volunteering can help build connections and make the transition to life in Ampang more enjoyable," remarked one expat who made the move to Ampang.
