How do I find a place to live in Canberra?
We asked expats how they chose their neighborhood and found a place to live. They answered:
"Finding a place to live in Canberra involves several steps. First, you need to determine your budget. This will help you narrow down the areas in Canberra that you can afford to live in. Next, you should research the different neighborhoods in Canberra to find one that suits your lifestyle and preferences. Some popular areas include Civic, Braddon, Kingston, and Belconnen. Consider factors such as proximity to work or school, availability of public transportation, safety, and the presence of amenities such as shops, restaurants, and parks. Once you've identified a few potential neighborhoods, you can start looking for available properties. There are several online platforms where you can search for rental or sale properties, such as realestate.com.au, Domain, and Allhomes. These websites allow you to filter properties based on location, price, property type, number of bedrooms, and other features. When you find a property you're interested in, contact the real estate agent or owner to arrange a viewing. It's important to inspect the property in person to check its condition and ensure it matches the description in the listing. If you're planning to rent, you'll need to fill out an application form and provide references. If your application is approved, you'll need to sign a lease agreement and pay a bond, which is usually equivalent to four weeks' rent. If you're planning to buy a property, you'll need to make an offer and negotiate with the seller. Once your offer is accepted, you'll need to arrange for a property inspection and secure financing for your purchase. Finally, once all the paperwork is completed and you've paid the necessary fees, you can move into your new home in Canberra," said one person in Canberra.
