What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Speightstown?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Speightstown about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Barbados. The island has a good standard of healthcare, with both public and private hospitals available. However, private healthcare can be expensive, so ensure you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Secondly, prenatal care is essential for the health of both the mother and the baby. Regular check-ups with a trusted obstetrician or midwife are recommended. There are several clinics and hospitals in and around Speightstown where you can receive prenatal care. Thirdly, consider where you want to give birth. The Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Bridgetown is the main public hospital in Barbados and has a maternity ward. However, if you prefer a home birth or a birth at a private hospital, make sure to plan this in advance. Fourthly, it's important to understand the local customs and practices around childbirth. In Barbados, it's common for the father to be present at the birth, and immediate family often visit soon after the baby is born. Fifthly, make sure you understand the process for registering the birth and obtaining a birth certificate. This is usually done at the Registrar's Office in Bridgetown. Lastly, if you're planning on raising your child in Barbados, it's worth considering the education system. Barbados has a high standard of education, with a range of both public and private schools available. Remember, having a baby in a foreign country can be a challenging experience, but with the right preparation and support, it can also be a very rewarding one," explained one expat living in Speightstown, Barbados.
