What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Stykkisholmur?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Stykkisholmur about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Iceland. The country has a high standard of healthcare and all residents, including expats, have access to maternity care. You should register with a local healthcare center as soon as you know you're pregnant. Regular check-ups and prenatal care are important for the health of both mother and baby. It's also advisable to learn some basic Icelandic phrases related to pregnancy and childbirth, as not all healthcare professionals may be fluent in English. However, most Icelanders speak English, so communication should not be a major issue. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. They can also help navigate any language or cultural barriers. Make sure to understand your maternity rights in Iceland. The country is known for its progressive parental leave policies, so ensure you're aware of your entitlements. Prepare for the weather. If your baby is due in winter, ensure you have appropriate clothing and equipment for the cold and often harsh Icelandic weather. Lastly, try to connect with other expat parents or local parenting groups in Stykkisholmur. They can provide invaluable advice, support, and friendship during this exciting time in your life," commented one expat who made the move to Stykkisholmur, Iceland.
