What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Uvita?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Uvita if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"In Uvita, it's important to avoid being overly direct or confrontational, as Ticos (Costa Ricans) value politeness and indirect communication. It's also considered rude to point with your fingers, instead, use your whole hand or nod in the direction. Avoid discussing sensitive topics such as politics, religion, or personal finances, as these are considered private matters. It's also considered impolite to refuse food or drink when offered by a host. Even if you're not hungry or thirsty, it's best to accept a small amount to show appreciation. Being late is common in Costa Rica, but as a foreigner, it's best to arrive on time to show respect. Avoid littering or showing disrespect to the environment, as Costa Rica is known for its commitment to environmental conservation. Lastly, while tipping is not mandatory in Costa Rica, it's appreciated, especially in the tourism industry. However, be aware that many restaurants automatically include a 10% service charge in the bill," commented one expat who made the move to Uvita, Costa Rica.
