Cavalaire-sur-Mer

Beach   Coastal   Beaches

Cavalaire-sur-Mer is a seaside town on the French Riviera in the Var department, where the first thing you notice is how the Mediterranean light hits the water differently depending on the hour—sharp and brilliant in morning, softer and almost amber by late afternoon. The town spreads along a curved bay with a long sandy beach that feels genuinely lived-in rather than purely touristic, lined with modest villas and apartment buildings that date from the mid-20th century. The waterfront has the casual, slightly worn quality of a place where locals still outnumber visitors outside peak season. The center is walkable and unpretentious, with a small harbor where fishing boats still operate, a market square with produce vendors, and cafés where people linger over coffee. The beach itself is the town's anchor—wide, accessible, and backed by a promenade where you'll see families, swimmers, and windsurfers depending on the day. Cavalaire sits between the more famous Côte d'Azur destinations to the east and the quieter Maures region inland, which gives it a middle-ground character: close enough to Saint-Tropez and Ramatuelle for day trips, but far enough removed to feel like its own place. The surrounding landscape includes pine forests and low hills that slope toward the coast, creating a sense of being tucked into the landscape rather than exposed.
