Roussillon

Country

Roussillon is a small village in the Vaucluse department of Provence, perched on a hilltop in the heart of the Luberon Valley. The village is famous for its striking ochre-colored buildings and streets, a result of the region's rich deposits of natural ochre pigment that have been mined and used for centuries. Walking through Roussillon feels like stepping into a landscape painting—the warm terracotta, rust, and golden hues of the buildings create an almost otherworldly atmosphere, especially during sunrise and sunset. The village has maintained its medieval character with narrow winding streets, a small central square, and views across the surrounding countryside of lavender fields, vineyards, and pine forests. Beyond the village itself, the area is known for the Ochre Trail (Sentier des Ocres), a popular hiking path through abandoned ochre quarries with dramatic cliffs and geological formations. Roussillon attracts artists, photographers, and visitors seeking authentic Provençal life away from the busier tourist centers, though it has become increasingly popular in recent decades. The surrounding region offers access to markets, restaurants, and cultural activities typical of rural Provence.
