Summary: Moving to Puerto Lopez, Ecuador: Expats, retirees and digital nomads talk about everything you need to know before moving to Puerto Lopez.
What do I need to know before moving to Puerto Lopez?
When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Puerto Lopez, they said:
"Puerto Lopez is a small fishing village located on the Pacific coast, known for its beautiful beaches and rich marine life. Before moving there, expats should know that the primary language spoken is Spanish, so it would be beneficial to learn the language or at least basic phrases. The cost of living is relatively low compared to many Western countries, but it's important to budget for unexpected expenses. The local cuisine is heavily seafood-based, with ceviche being a popular dish. Healthcare facilities in Puerto Lopez are basic, so for serious medical conditions, you may need to travel to larger cities. The town is generally safe, but like any place, it's important to take standard precautions to protect your personal safety and belongings. Public transportation is available, but it may not be as reliable or frequent as in larger cities. The climate is tropical, with a wet and dry season, and it can get quite hot and humid. The local culture is laid-back and friendly, but it's important to respect local customs and traditions. Internet service can be unreliable, which could be a challenge if you're planning to work remotely. The town is also a popular tourist destination, particularly for whale watching between June and October, so it can get crowded during these months. Lastly, it's important to understand the visa requirements and ensure you have the correct paperwork before moving," replied a member in Puerto Lopez.
