What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Mercedes?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Mercedes about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the healthcare system in Uruguay. The country has a high standard of healthcare, with both public and private options available. Ensure that you have comprehensive health insurance that covers maternity care. Some expats may be covered by their employer's insurance, but it's always best to check the specifics of your policy. Find a good obstetrician and hospital for your prenatal care and delivery. You can ask for recommendations from other expats or locals. Learn some basic Spanish if you don't already speak it. While many doctors and nurses in Uruguay speak English, not all medical staff may be fluent. Consider hiring a doula or midwife who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during childbirth. Prepare for your baby's citizenship and passport. If one or both parents are not Uruguayan, you may need to apply for your baby's citizenship and passport from your home country's embassy or consulate in Uruguay. Understand the maternity leave policies in Uruguay if you are working. The country has quite generous maternity leave policies, but it's important to know your rights and obligations. Lastly, connect with other expats who have had babies in Uruguay. They can provide invaluable advice and support, and may be able to recommend specific resources or services," explained one expat living in Mercedes, Uruguay.
