What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Amman?
We asked expat moms who gave birth in Amman about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...
"1. Research and choose a reputable hospital or clinic: It is essential to find a suitable healthcare facility that meets your needs and preferences. Look for recommendations from fellow expats, online forums, or your embassy. 2. Find a trusted obstetrician/gynecologist: Seek recommendations from friends, colleagues, or online expat communities to find a doctor who is experienced, speaks your language, and understands your cultural background. 3. Familiarize yourself with the local healthcare system: Understand the differences between public and private healthcare in Jordan, and ensure you have adequate health insurance coverage for prenatal care, delivery, and postnatal care. 4. Attend prenatal classes: Many hospitals and clinics offer prenatal classes for expectant parents. These classes can help you prepare for childbirth, learn about newborn care, and connect with other expats in similar situations. 5. Be prepared for cultural differences: Jordan is a predominantly Muslim country, and some cultural practices may differ from what you are used to. Be respectful of local customs and traditions, and be open to learning about new perspectives on pregnancy and childbirth. 6. Learn some Arabic: While many healthcare professionals in Amman speak English, it can be helpful to learn some basic Arabic phrases related to pregnancy and childbirth to facilitate communication with hospital staff. 7. Plan for the birth certificate and passport process: After your baby is born, you will need to obtain a birth certificate from the local authorities and apply for a passport from your home country's embassy. Research the requirements and necessary documents in advance to ensure a smooth process. 8. Connect with other expat parents: Join online forums, social media groups, or attend local meetups to connect with other expat parents in Amman. Sharing experiences and advice can be invaluable during this exciting and challenging time. 9. Consider hiring a doula or midwife: Some expats may prefer to have additional support during pregnancy and childbirth. A doula or midwife can provide emotional and physical support, as well as help navigate the local healthcare system. 10. Be prepared for postnatal care: After your baby is born, ensure you have access to postnatal care, including pediatricians, lactation consultants, and support groups. This will help you adjust to parenthood and ensure the health and well-being of your newborn," remarked another expat who made the move to Amman, Jordan.
"Find a doctor you are comfortable with and that uses Farah Hospital. Pay the extremely small fee to upgrade to one of the suites. I didn't want to leave the hospital it was so luxurious," explained one expat living in Amman, Jordan.
