"1. Seek out recommendations from other expats on reliable healthcare providers such as pediatricians and hospitals, as well as obstetricians, midwives and other birth professionals. 2. Invest in quality medical insurance that covers both in-country and out-of-country medical expenses. 3. Make sure the pregnancy is monitored closely, and know that prenatal classes are available for expectant parents. 4. Become familiar with the local maternity policies and availability of home birth options in the country. 5. Start preparing for the temporal and financial requirements for making the transition to life with a newborn. 6. Research the local support networks for parents, such as parent groups, baby classes and other activities available for newborns and their families. 7. Grow familiar with the cultural norms in Mexico associated with newborns and recognize any health issues related to mother and child that may require medical attention. 8. Find a pediatrician who speaks your language and who you feel comfortable with before delivering your baby," said a member in Merida, Mexico.
