What advice do you have for expats having a baby in Ericeira?

Answer this Question

We asked expat moms who gave birth in Ericeira about their experiences and advice they have for other moms to be. They said...

"Firstly, it's important to familiarize yourself with the Portuguese healthcare system. Portugal has a high standard of healthcare, with both public and private options available. Ensure that you have the necessary health insurance coverage. If you are employed in Portugal, you will be covered by the national health service. However, if you are not, you may need to arrange private health insurance. Find a good local doctor or midwife who speaks your language. This will make your prenatal appointments and the birth itself much easier to navigate. Consider hiring a doula or birth coach who can provide additional support and guidance throughout your pregnancy and during labor. Start looking into maternity hospitals or birthing centers in and around Ericeira. Visit a few to get a feel for where you would be most comfortable giving birth. Take prenatal classes. These can be a great way to prepare for the birth, learn about baby care, and meet other expectant parents. If you plan to give birth in a hospital, make sure you understand the hospital's policies on things like pain management, birthing positions, and who can be in the room with you during labor and delivery. Prepare all the necessary documents for your baby's birth certificate and passport. As an expat, you may need to deal with both the local Portuguese authorities and your home country's embassy or consulate. Finally, try to relax and enjoy this special time. Living in Ericeira, you're surrounded by beautiful beaches and a supportive community. Take advantage of this and make the most of your pregnancy and early days with your new baby," wrote a member who made the move to Ericeira, Portugal.
