What do expats find most challenging?
We asked expats and digital nomads what they find the most challenging about the local culture in Ha Long. They wrote...
"Expats in Ha Long often find the language barrier to be the most challenging aspect of the local culture, as Vietnamese is a tonal language that can be difficult to learn and understand. Additionally, the cultural norms and etiquette can be quite different from Western standards, which can lead to misunderstandings or confusion. The concept of "saving face" is also prevalent in Vietnamese culture, which can make direct communication and problem-solving more difficult. The pace of life can also be a challenge, as things often move slower in Vietnam compared to Western countries. Lastly, the traffic and driving habits in Ha Long can be chaotic and stressful for expats who are not used to it," wrote a member who made the move to Ha Long, Vietnam.
