As a foreigner living in Osaka, will I have access to public healthcare? What is it like?

Answer this Question

We asked expats in Osaka if they have access to public healthcare in Osaka. And, if they do have access, what is it like. They wrote...

"Yes, as a foreigner living in Osaka, you will have access to public healthcare. Japan has a universal healthcare system, which means that everyone, including foreigners, is required to be enrolled in a health insurance plan. This can either be the National Health Insurance provided by the government or an Employees' Health Insurance if you are working for a company. The public healthcare system in Japan is known for its high standards of care. Hospitals and clinics are well-equipped, and doctors and nurses are highly trained. However, it's important to note that not all healthcare providers may have English-speaking staff, so there might be a language barrier. The cost of healthcare in Japan is relatively low compared to many other developed countries. This is because the government sets the prices for medical services and medications. Under the public health insurance system, you will typically pay 30% of the cost of your treatment, with the insurance covering the rest. One unique aspect of healthcare in Japan is the emphasis on preventive care. Regular check-ups are encouraged and are often covered by insurance. This is part of the reason why Japan has one of the highest life expectancies in the world. However, it's important to note that dental and eye care are not fully covered by public health insurance. You will need to pay a portion of these costs out of pocket. In terms of mental health care, while it is available, it may not be as comprehensive or as widely understood as in some Western countries. There can also be a language barrier, as many mental health professionals may not speak English. Overall, as a foreigner in Osaka, you can expect to have access to high-quality healthcare, but you may face some challenges due to language barriers and cultural differences in the approach to healthcare," commented one expat who made the move to Osaka, Japan.
