What cultural faux pas should I try to avoid making in Afghanistan?

Answer this Question

We asked people in Afghanistan if they could share any humorous cultural blunders they commited. For new expats, keep in mind that these incidents are an inevitable part of expat life. Learning to laugh about them is the key!...

"It is important to be mindful of cultural norms in Afghanistan, such as respecting Islamic dress codes. You should dress modestly, avoiding clothing that is tight or revealing. It is important to recognize and accept distinctions between genders; avoid physical contact with members of the opposite sex that you are not related to, and always request permission before taking photos. Show respect for elders; when addressing them, use the honorific title "Mister" or "Madam". Finally, it is important to refrain from making any jokes about Islam or joking about the situation in Afghanistan," remarked another expat who made the move to Afghanistan.
