What do I need to know before moving to Oracabessa?

When we asked people what advice they would give someone preparing to move to Oracabessa, they said:

"Oracabessa is a small town located in the parish of Saint Mary, Jamaica, known for its beautiful beaches and rich history. Before moving to Oracabessa, expats should be aware of several factors to ensure a smooth transition. Firstly, understanding the local language is crucial. Although English is the official language of Jamaica, the local dialect, known as Patois, is widely spoken in Oracabessa. It's a blend of English, African, and other languages, and can be difficult to understand for newcomers. The cost of living in Oracabessa is relatively low compared to many Western countries. However, expats should be aware that wages are also generally lower, and imported goods can be expensive. Jamaica has a tropical climate, with hot and humid weather throughout the year. Oracabessa, being a coastal town, experiences this tropical climate, with the possibility of hurricanes during the hurricane season from June to November. Healthcare facilities in Oracabessa are basic, and serious medical conditions may require evacuation to a larger city or even another country. Therefore, comprehensive health insurance is highly recommended. The crime rate in Jamaica is high, and while Oracabessa is generally safer than larger cities like Kingston, expats should still take precautions to ensure their safety. This includes avoiding certain areas at night and not displaying signs of wealth. Public transportation in Oracabessa is not very reliable, and many expats choose to drive. However, driving in Jamaica can be challenging due to the poor condition of some roads and different driving habits. Jamaican cuisine is a blend of different culinary traditions, and the local food in Oracabessa is no exception. Expats should be prepared for a diet rich in seafood, tropical fruits, and spices. Finally, Jamaicans are known for their warm and friendly nature. Integrating into the local community and understanding the local customs and traditions can greatly enhance the expat experience in Oracabessa," commented one expat who made the move to Oracabessa.
